The tracker beeped a warning, and Nic halted. She searched the vast prairie before her, overgrown and damp. More dense woods guarded the prairie’s other side. This school truly was secluded.

Since she’d completed her Saturday detentions, Nic had decided to explore the school grounds, learning the territory for when she finally escaped. She’d been out here for hours, exploring the miles of lands and woods within school boundaries. Her next activity wasn’t scheduled for a while, so she had a little more time. She returned to the trail around Lake Harmony and followed it to see how far it went.

The trail ended abruptly in a narrow cove of water. On the other side, red brick peered through thick foliage. Nic stripped off her footwear and skipped across on the submerged bridge.

Her breath caught as she took in the building, the remnants of a church. She slipped through the boards at the entrance and froze to take in the wonder. Even in its abandonment, this place was beautiful. And sacred. For the first time in a long time, a familiar peace flowed across her heart, like cool water trickling down a scorched throat.

“God, is that you?” she prayed. “It’s me, Nic.”

“Nope,” said a voice, “just Jake.”

Nic jumped. She hadn’t seen the figure sitting in the far corner until she took another step into the chapel. Idiot. That sort of carelessness could get a soldier killed. Maybe it would get her killed, because Jacob Osgood had just seen her praying.

Osgood climbed to his feet. Nic’s heart slammed against her rib cage, and her hand fell to her side, fingers aching for the steel of her gun.

“Are you going to report me?” Nic demanded.

Osgood smiled and shook his head. “Nope.”

Nic snorted. Like she’d believe that. “Why not?” Since she had no gun, she settled for curling her hand into a fist.

He shrugged. “Because I don’t believe you should be punished for what you believe in.”

Nic’s mouth dropped open. What was he saying? First, Osgood stood up for her, then he gave her chocolate, and now he was spewing heresy. This had to be an Elite trap. To get her to trust someone, let her guard down. But why would they use a Councilor’s son, her enemy?

Her tracker beeped at her, a twenty-minute warning. If she didn’t want to get a citation for being late, she’d need to leave right now and run back to campus. But she was fixed in place.

“Why are you being kind to me?”

Osgood let out a breath and ran a hand through his hair. “Maybe because you deserve kindness. Maybe, because I’m sick of all the terrible things my family has done, and I want to atone for it. Or maybe—”

He stopped, his eyes searching around the room. Sunbeams shifted in patterns on the leaf-strewn floor. The wind snuck through the cracks in the window, stirring Nic’s hair, seeming to whisper ancient secrets. His fists opened and closed, opened and closed, and then he made a sound like giving in to something he shouldn’t.
